Some of the modern computer's USB ports apparently don't work, but I got mine working on a modern Macbook. I even tried connecting it to the USB on the back of my external display: this is connected to my Macbook via thunderbolt so it simply bypass any compatibility problems and again, it just works.
So where's the problem? Hi , I have had an SSL nucleus for many years ; and love it - it does not get the love it needs. However, I was like you when I first got it and was jumping for joy - it over time with complex digital set ups , there is some things that are frustrating with the Spdif. For example , there is no option to make it the master or the slave , and depending on the use of the digital inputs this may or not may be a problem for you and depending on how you use it.
Some digital interfaces it seems to play nice with , but others at worse it won't work - see posts on here. With my Raydat , if can work well but you have to get all the settings exactly so - sometimes it will appear to be working great only to get an occasionally digital click ever few minutes. There is no doubt that this is a fabulous controller and it's got style and better than any other control surface I have used - and I have used many many of them.
But it's not perfect, and the digital options can be a bit limiting at time if you can't get it stable ; I love the SSL preamps and monitor controller on the nucleus , just have been spoiled with rme digital options and I wish there was more options in the SSL digital section to suite my set up sometimes.
But it is a unit that deserves a lot of love and is a great solution - but you have to remember that when people buy it new and spend a lot of money and a couple of functions they need don't work properly , it would be a PITA and upsetting. Like you say about buying a car , great having a Ferrari but when the stereo doesn't work of your shiny new toy it can be annoying! Just giving a balanced view of the nucleus, but as long as people want the unit for its control, and preamps, and not so much for the digital connection or check it will work with your set up first then this unit is amazing Use windows by the way.
Yes , probably the best solution would of been a digital expansion option for the unit , with more options as the Spdif feels pegged on a bit. That way you could either save a bit of money, upgrade if you needed that and hopefully all would be happy.
It is an investment , but where else can you get 16 quality faders and full daw controller, jog wheel for that money and that quality? I had Mackie Mcu and expander but plastic buttons would stick and you can't set up all the soft key commands you need ; I have over now in Cubase for midi and editing and it makes it so fast if you take time to set up. Just wanted to chime in here too. Love the Nucleus! True the sound card is a bit iffy with clocking via optical but I have remained on Mavericks on the Mac Pro and a connection via the Thunderbolt Display is fine. I use it as a DAC straight out of the optical port of a second older macbook pro used as my analogue mix capture running at 96Khz.
I also aggregate the Digital ins to record the mic pre with the orpheus and a fire face and it all runs smoothly I monitor via the mixing desk so don't care about latency. After a few glitches I have got it pretty stable when I change the sample rate in audio midi just for the SSL sound card on the main machine and for built in optical on the second machine on both machines to 96 kHz it works reliably.
One thing that always bothered me was that wifi would not work at the same time as Nucleus. I am really chuffed that I have solved the issue with a router ordered directly from the SSL store which is configured to contain the IP Midi data from proliferating on the network via two ports on the router. Now I have got internet working via ethernet connected to the airport base station AND using a second airport express got wifi working with Logic Remote on an iPad simultaneously as the Nucleus.
Great for working with other musicians too as they can control their monitor mix and record when they feel ready with the iPad. Still working and using all elements of the Nucleus to its full capability.
Peace Robert P. Said that, someone who bought it new at 5 grands when it was just released and didn't know about all this is right to be annoyed that it doesn't work completely as it should! Jason rocks. I thought you can get the Nuc version 2 in black as well?
John Pursley. I will only be using the 2 mic pres and the unit as a control surface and the analog outs. I do not really need any of the digital outs. I did hear volume differences when panning but never pondered the science much, I just compensated with the fader. Substitute "analogue console of you choice"! After fooling around with it for the last week or so I've noticed a much cleaner sound to my mixes. The bass, kick, and snare all have more space down the middle now.
