Windows 7 desktop disappearing shortcuts
Sorry this didn't help. Thanks for your feedback. I found the cause of the misteriously disappearing Windows 7 desktop icons and the reason why Show desktop icons now and then gets unchecked. Try for yourselves, when you start Infrarecorder and close it again, go have a look at "Show desktop icons", it is unchecked but the icons are still there. Check it on again and start Infrarecorder This Windows 7 "bug" is irritating me since the beginning and now I found the cause: It's Infrarecorder which is causing this problem.
I created several icons on the desktops of 4 computers after clean installed the computers with Windows 7 Profession either with 32 bit or 64 bit versions. After a few days, some of the desktop icons disappear. I think Huskrfan is correct here. The Windows 7 system maintenance will go out and remove "broken" shortcuts on the desktop.
However I have seen it remove working shortcuts a countless number of times. Simply disabling this "feature" takes care of the issue. Had this happen to a user at my place of work.
This was the culprit but it came from a user having the shortcuts and just not using them. Of course they would show up on the desktop for any user of the machine, but in my case, there was only 1 user of the laptop, so it works fine for her.
Not a fix, but an acceptable solution, in my case. I've seen similar, and although the reason why eludes me, the fix was to right click desktop, view, tick "show desktop icons".

Everything was perfect till the next morining, the icons where gone. Is this the same issue as above? Did anyone try just disabling desktop cleanup via GPO? I have not had this issue and have been using Windows 7 since it was released. One of the first things Idid was disable desktop cleanup because I feel it is useless.
I know there is a setting in GPO for this. Wondering if this is changed to force disable that function if it would resolve? From the looks of the solution proposed it should.
Yeah, we disabled it via GPO because modifying the script may work for some time but revert back to its original state with windows update or other ways.
